Sola Ebiseni has resigned as Secretary-General of the pan-Yoruba socio-political group Afenifere after defecting from the Labour Party to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The former Labour Party chieftain and South-West Coordinator of Peter Obi’s 2023 presidential campaign made the announcement on Wednesday during a meeting with Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa at the Government House in Akure.
Ebiseni also declared his support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027. He linked his decision to the need for the presidency to remain in southern Nigeria, arguing that this would promote political stability.
“Our declaration today for the President’s second term is in tandem with the views of most Nigerians and political gladiators that the office of the President should still be in southern Nigeria in the interest of the political stability of the federation,” he said.
The Ilaje native further cited the Lagos-Calabar coastal road project as a key factor in his decision, describing it as transformative for his people.
“Politics is local, and as a leader of my Ilaje coastal people of Ondo State, this road is the most significant life-changing project for us, and I am here to join President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for its full implementation, particularly its proper coastal alignment in the state,” Ebiseni added.
Governor Aiyedatiwa welcomed Ebiseni and his supporters, assuring them of full integration into the APC’s campaign structures ahead of the 2027 elections. He described Ebiseni’s political experience as an asset to the party.
Aiyedatiwa highlighted Ebiseni’s past roles as chairman of the old Ilaje-Ese-Odo Local Government, a former commissioner in Ondo State, and his previous position as Afenifere Secretary-General, along with his involvement in other socio-political organisations.
