Months after the arrest of 16 military officers over alleged misconduct, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has officially confirmed that the detentions were linked to an alleged plot to overthrow the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The confirmation was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Director of Defence Information, Major-General Samaila Uba.

The military had earlier dismissed media reports suggesting an attempted coup as unfounded. However, despite the denial, 16 officers were quietly arrested over what was initially described as acts of indiscipline and breaches of service codes.

Among those arrested, according to findings by The Nation, are Brigadier-General M.A. Sadiq; Colonels Mohammed Magaji; Lieutenant Colonels Bayawo Abdullahi, Almakura, Baffa, Hayatu, Dagnaf, Ibrahim and Usman; Majors Jidda and Iliyasu; as well as retired Navy Captain Erasmus Victor, among others.

In its latest statement, the DHQ clarified that investigations have now established a connection between the arrested officers and alleged attempts to overthrow the government.

According to the military, investigations into the matter have been concluded, with the report forwarded to the appropriate superior authority in line with existing regulations.

“The comprehensive investigation process, conducted in accordance with established military procedures, has carefully examined all circumstances surrounding the conduct of the affected personnel,” the statement said.

It added that findings from the probe identified a number of officers allegedly involved in activities inconsistent with the ethics, values and professional standards expected of members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN).

“Those with cases to answer will be formally arraigned before an appropriate military judicial panel to face trial in accordance with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations. This is to ensure accountability while upholding the principles of fairness and due process,” the DHQ stated.

The military further assured Nigerians that the actions being taken are strictly disciplinary and part of internal mechanisms aimed at preserving order, discipline and operational effectiveness within the armed forces.

“The Armed Forces remain resolute in maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, loyalty and respect for constitutional authority,” the statement concluded.
