Former National Women Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Hajiya Mariya Waziri, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kebbi State, marking a significant political realignment in the state.
Waziri was formally received on Monday by Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi. She defected alongside the PDP Women Leader in the state and several other party executives.
Addressing a large gathering of women supporters, Waziri said her decision to leave the PDP after two decades was driven by what she described as the visible developmental strides of the APC-led administration in Kebbi State.
“I have been in the PDP for 20 years without joining any other party. My decision to join the APC today shows my confidence in the level of development I am seeing in Kebbi State,” she said.
She explained that extensive tours across the state convinced her that the current government is delivering tangible progress in key sectors.
“I have gone round the state and I am impressed with the projects. I will work tirelessly to ensure the victory of Governor Nasir Idris in 2027,” Waziri added.
In his response, Governor Idris described Waziri as a committed, development-driven leader with a strong record of advocating for women’s empowerment in Kebbi State.
He recalled a longstanding family relationship with her and noted that during her tenure as PDP National Women Leader, she consistently supported women in the state, especially during her visits from Abuja.
The governor assured Waziri of equal treatment within the APC, stressing that she would enjoy the same rights and responsibilities as all party members.
He also urged her to mobilise women across the state in preparation for the forthcoming visit of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to Kebbi State, as the party intensifies efforts ahead of future elections.
