Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that he will support only candidates who align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the forthcoming FCT Area Council elections scheduled for February 21 regardless of their political party.

Wike made the statement on Saturday night in Abuja during the 60th birthday celebration of Senator Sandy Onor, describing his stance as a matter of duty and conviction.

‘I Owe No One an Apology’
“We have the FCT Area Council election coming up on February 21, and I have a duty to support any candidate that supports President Tinubu to win,” Wike said.

“It is also my duty to ensure that any candidate who is not supporting Tinubu does not win in the election, and I owe no apology on my stand.”

The minister’s remarks signal his continued loyalty to the President and his readiness to influence grassroots politics in the nation’s capital ahead of the council polls.

Celebrating Sandy Onor at 60
The event, held in Abuja, celebrated six decades of what organisers described as scholarship, leadership, and service by Onor.

Wike described the former Cross River governorship candidate as “a credible ally, a trustworthy friend, and a good brother,” pledging enduring support.

Reading the celebrant’s citation, Prof. Anthony Eyang traced Onor’s journey from academia at the University of Calabar to the Nigerian Senate, highlighting his contributions to public service and intellectual discourse.

Former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom, who represented former Abia Governor Okezie Ikpeazu at the event, described Onor as an icon and a leader fit for greater responsibility.

Former Attorney General of the Federation, Chief Kalu Agabi (SAN), praised Onor’s courage and intellect, while scholars unveiled a Festschrift in his honour, reportedly supported with a N50 million contribution from friends and associates.

‘Excellence and Character Matter’
In his response, Onor expressed gratitude for the celebration, reflecting on the importance of excellence, character, and divine guidance in life.

“Everything becomes insignificant if the finger of God is absent in one’s life,” he said, thanking family and supporters for their encouragement.

As political realignments intensify ahead of upcoming elections, Wike’s declaration underscores his determination to consolidate support for Tinubu’s political vision within the FCT.
