More facts have emerged on the murder of prominent insurance lawyer, 62-year-old Olayiwola Adeola, daughter of a former Chief Judge of Ogun State, murdered by her domestic help at her Oniru Estate home at Victoria Island, Lagos on December 13, 2014.

Police say they might need to get the Interpol involved if it happens that the suspected killer, a young man identified only as Charles, had fled to Cotonou, where he was said to have come from.

We learnt that the deceased had only employed Charles who stabbed her to death, 12 days before the incident, through an agent, Julius Olutola.

Investigators at the Department of Criminal Investigations, Yaba, Lagos, said Olutola is now in custody.

“Nobody knows his surname, just Charles. But we now have information that he is from Cotonou,” a police source told our correspondent.

Adeola was said to have contracted Olutola to supply her with two domestic servants, who turned out to be Charles and Julius Alex.

“Even the agent who employed him does not know his surname,” our source was told.

The police said the investigation at this point had not revealed anything beyond the fact that the killer’s aim was to steal the deceased’s jewellery, money and other valuables she kept in the house.

But an inventory of what was taken away by the suspected killer was not revealed.

The police said while Charles fled after the act, Alex was apprehended.

Adeola, who was the first of seven children of former Ogun State Chief Judge and Justice of the Supreme Court, Ebenezer Craig, was born on September 10, 1952, according to the family.

After a sombre ceremony on Monday, December 29, 2014 at Our Saviour’s Church, Tafawa Balewa Square, Onikan, Lagos, she was buried at the Ikoyi Vaults and Gardens.

The deceased’s only two children, Enahoro and Iseme, reportedly live abroad.

On the possibility that the suspect in the lawyer’s murder had fled to his home country of Benin Republic, spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command, Mr. Kenneth Nwosu, said that would not deter the police from tracking him down.

He said, “Crimes do not have borders. You are aware that we are a member of Interpol, which has bureau in every country.

“If indeed he has fled to Cotonou, we will activate our Interpol connection and track him down and arrest him. Investigation is still ongoing on the case but no matter where the suspect goes, he cannot escape justice.”
