Former Ogun State governorship aspirant and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the Ogun Central Senatorial District, Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo, has launched a blistering attack on Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, accusing him of betrayal, dishonesty and lacking integrity.

Speaking during an interactive session with journalists in Abeokuta on Wednesday, Obasanjo said she had resolved to confront the senator politically after he allegedly failed to fulfil commitments made to her following the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship consensus arrangement.

She declared that she was determined to prove her political relevance, insisting that neither her name nor her family’s legacy in Ogun State could be undermined.

According to the former senator, she would have remained in the APC if Adeola had honoured the promises he allegedly made during reconciliation talks after the party’s consensus process.

Obasanjo stressed that character remains the most important quality in leadership, arguing that a lack of integrity ultimately leads to failure regardless of one’s position in society.

She further alleged that after requesting one week to respond to issues raised during their meeting, the senator failed to get back to her for six weeks.

According to her, Adeola only began reaching out after she had resigned from the APC, but she ignored his calls because she no longer trusted him.

Obasanjo claimed her supporters had requested three concessions during the meeting with the senator, including backing for her senatorial ambition within the APC, reimbursement of campaign expenses incurred during her governorship bid, and appointments for members of her political structure.

She maintained that she did not insist on all the demands being granted but only wanted clarity on what could be accommodated so she could properly brief her supporters.

The PDP candidate accused Adeola of treating people as disposable and further alleged that he later attempted to persuade her with a financial offer, which she described as insulting.

Obasanjo also claimed the APC halted her governorship ambition because of the momentum her campaign had gathered, insisting she would have defeated Adeola if the race had continued.

She officially announced the commencement of her campaign for the Ogun Central Senate seat, revealing plans to begin consultations across the six local government areas in the district before embarking on extensive media engagements.

The former senator said her confidence stems from her record of public service rather than political patronage, adding that she returned to her professional career after leaving office instead of seeking appointments.

Highlighting projects she executed during her time in the Senate, including interventions in mechanic villages and community infrastructure, Obasanjo argued that her achievements remain visible years after leaving office.

She maintained that politics should be about improving the lives of citizens and insisted she remains the candidate to beat in the Ogun Central senatorial election because of her track record.

Obasanjo also dismissed concerns that the simultaneous conduct of the presidential and National Assembly elections would affect her chances, expressing confidence that voters are capable of distinguishing between candidates.

On election security, she said citizens would peacefully defend their votes and insisted that no form of intimidation would prevent people from exercising their democratic rights.

She added that her nomination complied with all electoral guidelines, noting that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had accepted her as the PDP candidate for the Ogun Central Senatorial District.

Reaffirming her determination, Obasanjo vowed not to relent in her political battle against Adeola, declaring that she was fully prepared to defeat him at the polls.
