Nollywood powerhouse Funke Akindele has publicly thrown her support behind rising star Kamo State’s debut cinema feature, Starlomo, just days after her no-show at the film’s Lagos premiere fueled online speculation about a possible rift between the two.
The celebrated actress took to X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday to congratulate Kamo (born Akinyoola Ayoola) and director Kayode Kasum, while urging fans to head to the cinemas this weekend.
“STARLOMO… Let’s go see a good movie this weekend,” Akindele wrote. “Congratulations @kamo_state @kayodekasum. I wish you all the best at the box office. #starlomothemovie is now showing in all cinemas nationwide. Go see it!”
Kamo State responded warmly, calling her “Iyami” (my mother) and expressing gratitude for her consistent backing: “Iyami Da? Iyami Re ooo, Thank you for supporting me always ma, I’m grateful Mama.”
Akindele’s absence from the September 20 Lagos premiere had triggered social media chatter suggesting tension between the pair. Kamo moved quickly to shut down the rumours, clarifying that the actress was simply out of the country at the time.
“I woke up to see different opinions online about Iyamii and myself,” he posted. “Please we’re on good terms. She missed my premiere simply because she wasn’t in the country and nothing more to it, so please don’t assume otherwise.”
Widely regarded as one of Akindele’s protégés, Kamo has previously described their relationship as a divine blessing and a major career turning point. The actress’s latest endorsement arrives as Starlomo begins its nationwide theatrical run, marking the popular content creator, comedian and actor’s official transition from skits to the big screen.
Kamo first rose to fame as part of the comedy duo Nepa Boys with former partner Ozain before embarking on a successful solo career. He has since appeared in notable projects including Warlord, Behind The Scenes, Abanisete, Adunni, Everybody Loves Jenifa and Labake Olododo.
With Starlomo now showing in cinemas across Nigeria, Akindele’s high-profile show of support is expected to further boost visibility for the film and its young lead.
