Afrobeat musician and activist Femi Kuti has argued that President Bola Tinubu is not the primary problem confronting Nigeria, pointing instead to institutional corruption and weaknesses within the country’s judicial system.
Kuti made the remarks during a recent episode of the GoodNews Naija podcast, where he questioned how Tinubu was able to contest the presidency despite the allegations that have been raised against him.
According to the Afrobeat icon, Nigeria’s challenges are deeply rooted in a system that allows individuals accused of wrongdoing to attain positions of authority.
“Do you think Tinubu is the problem? The judiciary that didn’t stop him from getting there in the first place is a problem. If all the allegations against him are true, how did he contest?” Kuti asked.
He argued that a credible and independent judiciary would have scrutinised the allegations against political candidates and prevented individuals lacking the required integrity from seeking the highest offices in the country.
“If we had men and women of calibre and integrity, he wouldn’t have been able to contest in the first place,” he said.
Kuti further maintained that corruption extends across Nigeria’s political and institutional structures, with people in positions of authority often belonging to the same elite class.
He warned that the persistence of systemic corruption could undermine the hopes and aspirations of young Nigerians, particularly those looking to build a better future in the country.
