LAGOS, NIGERIA – Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has officially ordered the controlled demolition of the historic Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) House on Martins Street, Lagos Island. The directive follows a catastrophic Christmas Eve inferno that tore through the 22-storey landmark, leaving a trail of death and structural instability.
A Somber Recovery Operation
In a statement released via his official X account on Friday, January 2, 2026, the Governor confirmed the death toll has risen to eight. While five victims have been identified, three remains are still awaiting identification. Thirteen survivors have been rescued from the site so far.
Emergency teams from LASEMA and NEMA continue to comb through the rubble, specifically focusing on the rear of the building to ensure no further victims are trapped.
“Safety Above All Else”
Speaking during a site inspection, Sanwo-Olu declared the area a “no-go zone” for businesses and unauthorized persons.
“Following a full structural review, the GNI building will be demolished using the safest possible methods,” the Governor stated. “Some surrounding buildings must also be removed. While these are difficult decisions, we must prioritize the safety of lives above all else.”
Root Causes and Government Response
Preliminary investigations pointed to a “perfect storm” of safety violations that exacerbated the disaster. Authorities cited the improper use of generators and the illegal construction of shops in close proximity to power transformers as primary factors in the fire’s scale.
To assist grieving families and displaced business owners, a dedicated information center has been established at the site, staffed by officers from LASEMA, NEMA, and the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA).
The Governor concluded with a stern warning to Lagosians regarding safety compliance, vowing that the government remains committed to a thorough recovery process.
