Nollywood actor Mofe Duncan has strongly criticised a social media user who mocked public tributes to late actor Alexx Ekubo, sparking renewed conversations about grief, empathy and online behaviour.

The controversy began after Duncan shared a heartfelt tribute in honour of Ekubo, who passed away last month following a battle with cancer. While many fans and colleagues expressed condolences, one commenter questioned the sincerity of the outpouring of sympathy.

The social media user suggested that despite the emotional messages being shared, none of Ekubo’s colleagues would be willing to sacrifice their own lives for him, dismissing the tributes as meaningless.

Duncan reacted swiftly, describing the remark as thoughtless and inappropriate. He accused the commenter of displaying poor judgement and urged people to show greater sensitivity when responding to posts related to loss and mourning.

The exchange gained wider attention after the actor posted a screenshot of the conversation on Instagram. In a strongly worded caption, Duncan labelled the commenter “persona non grata” and lamented what he described as the growing lack of respect and empathy on social media platforms.

According to the actor, such remarks reflect a troubling culture of insensitivity online, particularly when directed at individuals grieving the loss of loved ones and colleagues.

The incident comes as the entertainment industry continues to mourn the death of Alexx Ekubo, whose passing was announced in May. He was 40 years old.

In a statement released at the time, Ekubo’s family revealed that the actor died at Evercare Hospital after a brief but courageous battle with advanced metastatic kidney cancer.

His death triggered an overwhelming wave of tributes from across Nollywood, with actors, filmmakers and fans celebrating his contributions to the industry and sharing memories of his life and career.

The latest online controversy also unfolds amid a personally difficult period for Duncan. Earlier this year, the actor announced the death of his father, Josbert Thomas Kofi Duncan, describing the loss as heartbreaking.

He later expressed gratitude to supporters for their prayers, messages and condolences, saying the encouragement he received provided comfort during a painful time.

As debates continue over how celebrities and fans publicly express grief, Duncan’s response has highlighted the emotional impact that insensitive online comments can have on those mourning the loss of friends, family members and colleagues.
