Master Warrant Officer Michael Etuwe, the former orderly to Nigeria’s late Head of State, General Murtala Ramat Mohammed, has been honoured at his residence in Nasarawa State by a high-powered delegation led by the Chairman of the Military Pensions Board (MPB), Air Vice Marshal Mikail Abdulraheem.

The delegation comprised members of the Ministerial Committee on Veterans’ Welfare alongside representatives of various veterans’ associations. The visit formed part of activities marking the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, as well as the MPB’s ongoing commitment to recognising and supporting military veterans under the current administration.

Speaking during the visit, Air Vice Marshal Abdulraheem described the engagement as a “symbolic recognition” of exceptional military service and sacrifice.

“This visit is a tribute to veterans whose dedication and sacrifices contributed immensely to the defence, stability, and unity of our nation,” he said.

Master Warrant Officer Etuwe served closely with General Murtala Ramat Mohammed during a defining period in Nigeria’s history. Notably, he was on duty as the Head of State’s orderly and was in the official vehicle on 13 February 1976 when General Mohammed was assassinated in Lagos.

According to AVM Abdulraheem, Etuwe’s service places him among the few living witnesses to one of the most significant and defining moments in Nigeria’s national journey.

He reaffirmed the Military Pensions Board’s resolve to uphold the welfare, dignity, and continued engagement of military veterans, stressing that their sacrifices remain a cornerstone of Nigeria’s peace and national development.

In his response, Etuwe expressed gratitude for the visit, describing it as a “rare and meaningful honour.” He thanked the Chairman of the MPB and the wider veterans’ community for the recognition and solidarity.

A statement by the Board’s Public Relations Officer, Squadron Leader Aliyu Mohammed, noted that the visit ended in an atmosphere of reflection and mutual respect, underscoring the collective responsibility to preserve the legacy and wellbeing of those who served Nigeria with courage and loyalty.
