The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly rejected what it calls a wave of “deliberate misinformation and propaganda” surrounding its candidate selection and internal financing process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the opposition party said the claims were being spread by “disgruntled elements” and “sponsored opposition figures” unsettled by its growing nationwide support.
Director noted that the NDC currently holds no executive positions—no president, governors, or ministers—making the task of building and sustaining the party particularly challenging. To address this, the party took a proactive decision, in line with its constitution, to solicit financial contributions, levies, and donations from aspirants, stakeholders, and members of the public.
“All such contributions, levies, and donations were paid directly into the designated party account and received and managed by the appropriate organs of the party,” the statement said. “It is standard practice worldwide for political parties to receive donations, levies, and contributions from members, supporters, and stakeholders.”
The NDC emphasised that its National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, neither demanded nor received any money from aspirants for personal use. It stated that all funds were duly receipted and accounted for in accordance with global best practices, and that the party would render a full account of its finances as required by the Electoral Act and INEC guidelines when due.
The party further clarified that presidential and vice-presidential tickets, as well as several other candidacies, were offered free of charge based on the quality of the candidates. It insisted that no party tickets were sold.
“The NDC is funded not by stolen funds from government treasuries at any level, but by donations, levies, and contributions from members, stakeholders, and well-wishers,” the statement added.
Anyone claiming to have paid money to individuals outside the official party account was urged to come forward with evidence. The party said it would not shield anyone and is considering legal action against those spreading falsehoods.
Director described the campaign against the party as an orchestrated attempt to damage its image and slow its rising traction. He highlighted Dickson’s long public service record and reputation for integrity, honesty, and simplicity.
“The NDC remains committed to building a new Nigeria on the pillars of transparency, due process, and justice. We will not be distracted,” the statement concluded, calling on the media, members, and the public to disregard the false narratives.
