Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Founder of Living Faith Church Worldwide, David Oyedepo, have stressed the urgent need for value-based and impact-driven leadership as a solution to Africa’s governance challenges.

The duo spoke during Oyedepo’s visit to the Olusegun Obasanjo Leadership Institute in Abeokuta, where Obasanjo identified leadership deficit as the continent’s most pressing issue.

According to the former president, the institute was established to address the problem at its foundation by focusing on leadership development from secondary school through tertiary institutions and campus leadership systems.

He cited a specialised leadership programme at the University of Lagos as a practical example, noting that it has led to significant reorientation among student leaders and improved governance within the institution.

Oyedepo, in his remarks, commended Obasanjo’s vision, describing the institute as a timely intervention in the quest for transformative leadership across Africa.

He highlighted the institute’s emphasis on experiential learning, noting that its model—featuring seasoned facilitators and former African presidents—provides a unique platform for practical leadership training rooted in real-life experiences.

According to the cleric, this approach moves beyond theoretical teachings to incorporate tested principles, case studies, and lessons drawn from decades of governance, diplomacy, and public service.

Oyedepo also reaffirmed his support for the institute’s dual focus on nurturing both emerging and established leaders, praising its integration of moral values, strategic thinking, and practical competence.

He pledged continued support through partnership and participation, offering his experience in ministry, education, and institution-building to strengthen the institute’s programmes.

Speaking on behalf of the institute’s director, retired General Martin Luther Agwai, Deputy Director Adedeji Daramola revealed plans to expand leadership training across Nigeria.

He disclosed that the institute, in collaboration with the Youth Development Centre of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, will engage the Gombe State Youth Parliament in intensive leadership workshops aimed at students, young professionals, and emerging leaders.

Daramola explained that the initiative is part of a broader strategy to democratise access to quality leadership education, ensuring that young Nigerians across all regions are equipped with the skills and values needed for effective leadership.
