Veteran actress and filmmaker Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has opened up about her experience of being banned by Nollywood movie marketers in 2005, describing the episode as a defining moment in her career and personal growth.
Speaking during an interview on Yanga FM, Omotola disclosed that she, alongside other top Nollywood stars including Genevieve Nnaji, Ramsey Nouah, Jim Iyke, Stella Damasus, Richard Mofe-Damijo and Nkem Owoh, was blacklisted for demanding higher standards and improved quality in filmmaking.
According to the actress, the marketers viewed their advocacy as disruptive, branding them a “bad influence” within the industry. She revealed that while the ban was later lifted for some of the affected actors, hers lasted longer because she declined to attend a reconciliation meeting.
Omotola explained that the extended restriction forced her to reassess her creative priorities and explore new opportunities beyond acting. During the period, she released her first music album and invested in several business ventures, including property development.
She described the experience as a turning point that reshaped her outlook on creativity and career sustainability, helping her discover a stronger passion for directing rather than acting full-time.
Recounting the incident, Omotola said the ban began in 2005 when marketers accused the actors of causing too much “wahala” by pushing for standards that challenged the status quo. Despite the setback, she noted that the experience ultimately strengthened her resolve and expanded her creative horizons.
