Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji, on Thursday launched the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Emblem Appeal Fund, reaffirming his administration’s resolve to strengthen security and sustain peace across the state.

The governor called on Nigerians to embrace unity, love and collective progress, stressing that security remains a shared responsibility that requires citizens to work hand-in-hand with the armed forces and other security agencies.

Speaking in Ado Ekiti during the emblem launch—an event that signalled the commencement of activities for the annual Armed Forces Remembrance Day—Oyebanji, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Habibat Adubiaro, announced a personal donation of ₦5 million to kick-start the appeal fund.

He explained that the initiative was designed to raise funds to support military veterans, widows of fallen heroes and serving personnel facing various challenges.

“As a government, it is our duty to prioritise security in order to make society a safe environment,” the governor said. “Efforts have been made to improve security operations in Ekiti State, especially through collaboration with other South-West states to establish a coordinated, tech-driven and community-supported security architecture under the Amotekun Corps.”

According to him, the regional security framework is aimed at securing the South-West and sustaining peace through the deployment of modern technology to support security personnel in the discharge of their duties.

Oyebanji urged Nigerians to reflect deeply on the significance of the Armed Forces Remembrance Day by honouring the courage and sacrifices of fallen heroes who laid down their lives in defence of the nation.

“Our administration remains committed to supporting the welfare of retired and serving personnel within available resources, through collaboration with the Nigerian Legion and other relevant bodies,” he said. “This is to ensure improved support systems, empowerment opportunities and programmes that restore dignity and hope to our veterans.”

The governor also commended President Bola Tinubu for his efforts to ensure national security and stability despite prevailing challenges, while appealing to individuals and organisations to support the emblem appeal fund.

“I call on public servants, corporate bodies, traditional rulers, religious institutions, schools, unions and community groups to support this appeal. Let us give generously and show our servicemen and women that their sacrifices are not forgotten,” Oyebanji said.

He added that the emblem symbolises unity beyond tribe, religion and geography, reminding Nigerians that peace and stability were earned through the bravery of the armed forces.

Earlier, the Head of Service, Dr. Folakemi Olomojobi, described the event as an opportunity to remember, celebrate and honour the patriotic service of military personnel who defended Nigeria’s sovereignty through civil wars, peacekeeping missions and other statutory duties.

She urged citizens to remain committed to unity and peaceful coexistence for the growth of Ekiti State and the country at large.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Nigerian Legion in Ekiti State, Mr. Abdurazak Atoki, praised Governor Oyebanji for his consistent support for the Legion and military veterans in the state.
