The Oyo State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a work-free day to commemorate the Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1448AH.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, who said the government recognises the significance of the Hijrah in the lives of Muslims across the state.

According to Oyelade, the Hijrah commemorates the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD, an event regarded as one of the most important milestones in Islamic history.

“As a gesture of respect and solidarity with the Muslim community, we have declared tomorrow, Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a work-free day in the state,” the commissioner stated.

He urged residents to use the occasion to pray for peace, unity and prosperity in Oyo State and Nigeria as a whole.

Oyelade also encouraged citizens to reflect on the teachings of the Hijrah and embrace the spirit of brotherhood, solidarity and peaceful coexistence.

“The Hijrah is a time for reflection, prayer and community spirit. Let us come together on this day to pray for peace, unity and prosperity in our state and our nation,” he added.
