The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while being held captive by bandits, describing the development as a heartbreaking loss for both the state and the nation.
In a statement issued on Friday, the government disclosed that the retired military officer died despite sustained efforts by security agencies and state authorities to secure his freedom from his abductors.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident, extending condolences to the family of the late General and acknowledging his invaluable service to the country.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General’s death while in bandits’ captivity. Despite the relentless and concerted efforts of the State Government and various security agencies to secure his safe release, the situation ended in this tragedy,” the statement read.
According to the government, the retired General succumbed to complications arising from diabetes and hypertension while in captivity.
Officials described the incident as more than a personal loss to the bereaved family, noting that it also represents a significant national tragedy given the deceased’s distinguished military career and contributions to Nigeria.
The state government said the unfortunate development underscores the persistent security challenges facing communities across the region and highlights the need for stronger collaboration between federal and state authorities in the fight against banditry.
Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to intensifying security operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks responsible for kidnappings and violent attacks in Katsina State and neighbouring areas.
The government assured residents that efforts to improve public safety and combat insecurity would continue in partnership with federal security agencies.
It also extended its sympathies to the family of the late retired General, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul and urging citizens to remain steadfast amid ongoing security concerns.
The death of Major General Abubakar has further heightened concerns over the continued threat of banditry in north-west Nigeria, where kidnappings for ransom and violent raids have remained major security challenges.
