The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has called on Nigerian leaders to prioritise economic policies that improve the welfare of citizens, insisting that every policy should be judged by its impact on the lives of the people.

Speaking at a conference in Kano on Thursday, the monarch said Nigeria needs economic policies that reduce poverty, improve living standards and promote inclusive growth. He was represented at the event by the Danmadamin Kano and Professor of Economics at Bayero University, Kano, Prof. Abubakar Aliyu Sanusi.

Describing the conference as timely, Sanusi said the country is facing significant economic and political challenges that require people-centred solutions.

He said economic reforms should be assessed based on their ability to improve citizens’ welfare, stressing that any policy that fails to enhance the well-being of the people cannot be considered effective.

The emir also urged leaders to learn from history, strengthen institutions and uphold justice, noting that no nation can build a better future without addressing unresolved issues from its past.

He identified insecurity, corruption, poverty and poor infrastructure as some of Nigeria’s biggest challenges and called on political leaders to put national interest above personal ambitions.

According to him, power-sharing should go beyond geographical rotation and focus on producing credible, competent and compassionate leaders committed to serving the people.

Sanusi further appealed to Nigerians, irrespective of their religion or political affiliation, to embrace unity, tolerance and collective responsibility in building a peaceful and prosperous nation.

While acknowledging the progress Nigeria has made since independence, the emir said the country continues to grapple with political instability, ethnic and religious tensions, insecurity and economic hardship, urging all stakeholders to work together to address the challenges.
