Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has applauded the remarkable achievement of Rukayat Suleimon, who made history as the first female blind sambist to win gold at the World Sambo Cup.
In a statement released on Monday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, the governor praised Suleimon for bringing pride to Lagos State and Nigeria following her outstanding performance at the World Sambo Cupheld in Yerevan, Armenia.
Suleimon, a trailblazer in the sport, stunned competitors in the women’s 54kg category, defeating opponents from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan to clinch the gold medal.
Sanwo-Olu described her victory as a groundbreaking feat, noting that she is not only the first Nigerian and African to secure international sambo gold but also the first female blind athlete globally to achieve such a milestone in the sport.
“Congratulations to Suleimon for making Nigeria and Africa proud by winning gold at the World Sambo Cup in Yerevan,” the governor said. “Her achievement is a testament to resilience, excellence, and the boundless potential Nigeria offers the world.”
He further highlighted that winning gold on her international debut underscores her dedication, preparation, and unwavering determination.
Sanwo-Olu added that Suleimon’s success would serve as a powerful source of inspiration for young girls across Nigeria, encouraging them to pursue their dreams with courage and confidence despite challenges.
