Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, alongside Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, and other dignitaries, on Tuesday unveiled the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Ultra-Modern Garage in Ebute Metta.
The facility, delivered by the Lagos State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), was described as the union’s first privately owned garage equipped with a clinic, toilet facilities and Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras.
The event also featured a humanitarian gesture, with ten family members of deceased former state chairmen of the union receiving ₦5 million each.
In addition, Seyi Tinubu, son of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Segun Banjoko, donated an extra ₦2.5 million to each beneficiary.
Represented by his Special Adviser on Transportation, Sola Giwa, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the project as “another milestone in our journey toward a smarter, more organised Lagos.”
He said the initiative exemplifies the state government’s collaborative approach to transport reform, where government provides policy direction and oversight while stakeholders invest in infrastructure that enhances mobility and commuter safety.
“As we commissioned this facility, we reaffirm our commitment to a transport system that is safe, efficient, technology-driven and worthy of a global city,” the governor stated.
Speaker Obasa, in his remarks, advocated the adoption of electronic payment systems for union rates to improve efficiency and minimise friction between collectors and drivers.
He also urged members to comply with existing laws, avoid illegal parking and maintain unity to sustain progress within the union.
Chairman of Lagos Mainland Local Government, Jubril Emilagba, pledged additional solar street lighting around the facility and warned motorists against indiscriminate parking, stressing that violators would face sanctions.
The unveiling ceremony drew traditional rulers, union leaders and government officials, marking what stakeholders described as a significant step in strengthening Lagos’ transport infrastructure and urban mobility framework.
