Sanwo-Olu Unveils ₦100M Grant, Luxury Apartments and Vehicles for Lagos Legionnaires Ahead of Remembrance Day

IKEJA, LAGOS – In a powerful show of gratitude for Nigeria’s military veterans, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced a massive ₦100 million donation and a suite of high-value assets to the Lagos State Council of the Nigerian Legion.
The gesture, unveiled on Monday, January 5, 2026, marks the official launch of the Year 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem Appeal Fund at the State House in Ikeja.
A “Tangible” Thank You to Fallen Heroes
Beyond the ₦100 million cash grant, the Governor’s welfare package includes:
  • Housing: Four units of two-bedroom apartments located in Ajara.
  • Mobility: Two brand-new pick-up utility vehicles for the Council’s operations.
  • Food Security: 500 bags of rice, four cows, and assorted food items for Legionnaires and families of fallen heroes.
“Our sovereignty as a nation exists because of these brave men and women,” Governor Sanwo-Olu stated during the State Executive Council meeting. “The Emblem Appeal is a responsibility we owe to those who laid down their lives for Nigeria and to those who returned with life-changing injuries. We must remember them in real and tangible ways.”
Supporting the Sovereignty of Nigeria
The Governor emphasized that supporting the Nigerian Legion is a “constitutional duty” and a tradition his administration is committed to upholding. He noted that the sacrifices of the Armed Forces are the bedrock of the freedom and unity currently enjoyed in the country.
Impact on Veterans
The Commandant of the Lagos Council of the Nigerian Legion, Akeem Wolimoh, hailed the Governor for his consistent support. He revealed that past interventions have allowed the chapter to significantly improve the living conditions of veterans and empower their dependents through skill acquisition programs led by various state ministries.
High-Level Attendance
The event saw a gathering of the state’s top brass, including Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, Head of Service Bode Agoro, and high-ranking military officers such as Brigadier-General A. O. Owolabi(Commander, 9 Brigade) and Air Commodore M. A. Imam (Commander, Sam Ethnan Air Force Base).
The 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day will be commemorated nationwide on January 15, 2026.
