Tony Elumelu: Luck Played a Major Role in My Success

Billionaire entrepreneur and philanthropist, Tony Elumelu, has attributed a significant part of his success to luck, stressing that achievement is not solely determined by intelligence, talent, or hard work.

Speaking during an interview with Korty EO, the Chairman of Heirs Holdings reflected on his journey in business and leadership, offering insights into the factors that shaped his rise to prominence.

According to Elumelu, success does not always favour the smartest, strongest, or most capable individual. He noted that timing, opportunity, and favourable circumstances often influence outcomes just as much as personal effort.

The business mogul described himself as “a product of luck,” explaining that fortunate opportunities, combined with determination, preparation, and hard work, helped pave the way for his accomplishments.

“At times, you don’t come out successful because you are the best in class or because you’re the fittest or most energetic. Sometimes you need luck, and I’m a product of luck,” Elumelu said.

His remarks highlight the often-overlooked role of chance and timing in achieving success, while underscoring the importance of being prepared to seize opportunities when they arise.
