Nigerian singer, actor and entrepreneur Bankole Wellington, popularly known as Banky W, has opened up about how his defeat in the 2023 general election affected him emotionally and contributed to his journey into pastoral ministry.
Naija News reports that Banky W contested for the Eti-Osa Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) but lost the election.
Reflecting on the experience, the entertainer described the defeat as heartbreaking, noting that it prompted him to seek God's direction concerning the next phase of his life.
Banky W shared his experience while celebrating his first anniversary as a pastor, explaining that the election outcome made him question whether he should focus on politics, entertainment, business or ministry.
In a post reflecting on his journey, the singer said he initially struggled to understand what God wanted him to do after the election setback.
He wrote, “I used to joke that the ‘P’ in P.Banks stood for Professor, not Pastor. I guess God heard and said, ‘Why not both?’”
Recalling the 2023 election, Banky W said the experience inspired him in several ways but also left him emotionally devastated.
He explained that after the election, he turned to God for guidance, asking whether his future lay in leadership, ministry, entertainment or business.
According to him, he eventually realised that he did not have to choose between his different interests and professional pursuits.
The singer said he came to understand that his calling could encompass several areas, including filmmaking, music, entrepreneurship, academia and pastoral ministry.
Banky W added that his journey had taught him that what might initially appear to be a disappointment could ultimately lead to a greater purpose.
Reflecting on the past year, he noted that although the election did not produce the outcome he had hoped for, he believes God's plans for his life extend beyond his personal ambitions.
He concluded by celebrating his first year in pastoral ministry and expressing optimism about the future.
“Turns out, God wasn't trying to put me in a box. He was expanding my assignment. So yes, I'm still a filmmaker, musician, and entrepreneur. But somehow, by the grace of God, I'm also a Pastor AND a Professor,” he said.
He added, “One year later, I'm reminded that sometimes what feels like the end of your story is really just God turning the page. The election didn't go the way I hoped. But God's plans for my life are bigger than the plans I had for myself.”
Banky W ended his message by marking one year in pastoral ministry and looking forward to a lifetime of purpose.
