Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has congratulated President Bola Tinubu following the Senate’s passage of a constitutional amendment bill seeking to establish State Police across Nigeria.

In a personally signed statement, Sanwo-Olu described the legislative approval as “epochal,” noting that the development marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s security and governance structure.

He said President Tinubu has demonstrated strong commitment to true federalism, adding that the approval of State Police reflects a long-standing reform vision championed by the president.

According to him, the introduction of State Police represents a major step forward in the fight against terrorism, violent crime, and other security challenges confronting the country.

The governor further praised Tinubu’s leadership and recalled that the idea of decentralised policing had been central to his reform thinking since his tenure as Governor of Lagos State between 1999 and 2007.

“Today is a great day for our country, a day to celebrate the triumph of genuine democratic and developmental ideas over parochial sentiments,” he said.

He added that State Police had remained a consistent part of Tinubu’s governance philosophy since 1999, stressing that its emergence at the national level is a milestone in Nigeria’s political evolution.

Sanwo-Olu also commended the Senate for “making history” with the passage of the bill and urged state Houses of Assembly across the country to endorse the amendment to ensure its full implementation.

President Bola Tinubu, Bola Tinubu, has long been associated with calls for decentralised policing as part of broader security and governance reforms in Nigeria.
