Abuja, Nigeria — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced a sweeping shift in Nigeria’s foreign policy direction, unveiling a “Nigeria First” framework designed to prioritize national interests and deliver tangible benefits to citizens.

Speaking at the opening of an induction programme for newly appointed ambassadors and high commissioners in Abuja, the President said the rapidly changing global landscape demands a strategic recalibration of Nigeria’s diplomatic approach.

A key highlight of the reform is the reordering of the country’s longstanding 4D foreign policy framework. Previously anchored on Democracy, Development, Demography, and Diaspora, the strategy has now been rearranged to Demography, Development, Diaspora, and Democracy—a move Tinubu said places Nigerians at the heart of foreign engagements.

“This reordering has put the Nigerian people at the centre of our foreign policy agenda and is aimed at harnessing outcomes for their maximum benefit,” the President stated.

Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, Tinubu urged the envoys to align their diplomatic responsibilities with his administration’s goal of strengthening Nigeria’s global standing. He tasked them with aggressively pursuing foreign investments and reshaping the country’s international image.

According to the President, the global system is undergoing profound transformation driven by geopolitical shifts, economic volatility, technological disruption, climate challenges, and emerging security threats. These dynamics, he noted, make the role of diplomats more critical than ever.

“The international system is evolving rapidly. We must be prepared to meet these challenges by focusing on how best to protect and promote Nigeria’s national interest,” he said.

Tinubu emphasized the need for a modern, results-driven diplomatic strategy that blends traditional methods with digital engagement, public diplomacy, and strategic communication. He called on envoys to actively promote Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Agenda while projecting the country’s achievements on the global stage.

He also stressed the importance of crafting a compelling national narrative, urging diplomats to be proactive and innovative in building partnerships, boosting trade, and attracting foreign direct investment and technology.

Safeguarding the welfare of Nigerians in the diaspora, he added, remains a top priority for all foreign missions.

The President further underscored professionalism, integrity, and accountability as essential values for diplomatic service. He called for prudent resource management and measurable performance outcomes that contribute to economic growth and national development.

Tinubu encouraged participants to fully engage in the induction programme, noting that it was designed to equip them with the tools needed for effective diplomacy in a fast-changing world.

Commending the National Assembly for swiftly confirming the nominees, he urged the envoys to оправдать the confidence placed in them.

“You have a special responsibility in helping to reposition Nigeria in global affairs. The world is watching,” he said.
