The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent intervention in the political crisis involving Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, should be the final time the President steps in to resolve the dispute.
Wike made the remark on Tuesday while speaking with journalists after inspecting ongoing infrastructure projects in the FCT, days after President Tinubu brokered a fresh peace move between him and Governor Fubara at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Sunday night.
Addressing questions on the lingering Rivers State crisis, the former governor said President Tinubu intervened in his capacity as a father figure and peacemaker, but stressed that such intervention should not become a recurring necessity.
“All I can tell you is that Mr President has been very kind to the people of the state. If there seems to be a problem between the legislature and the governor, as a father, he really has to intervene,” Wike said.
He noted that the President had stepped in on two occasions and expressed confidence that the latest effort would bring lasting resolution.
“I remember this is the second time Mr President has intervened. I believe, by the grace of God, this will be the last time,” he said.
Wike added that he had advised the Rivers State House of Assembly to comply with the President’s directive.
“I have told the Assembly to obey Mr President, which I know they will not hesitate to do. I also believe that this is the final time we must be hearing this kind of discourse,” he stated.
Further details are expected as developments unfold.
