World Cup Knockout Stage Begins Today with Portugal vs Spain, Brazil, England in Action

The knockout phase of the 2026 FIFA World Cup begins on Saturday as the remaining 16 teams battle for places in the quarter-finals following the conclusion of the Round of 32.

Tournament favourites Argentina, Brazil, France, England, Spain and Portugal remain in contention for the title, while surprise packages Morocco, Norway and Paraguay continue their impressive campaigns in the expanded 48-team tournament.

The Round of 16 opens with two fixtures on Saturday. Canada will face Morocco at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, while France take on Paraguay at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

On Sunday, Brazil continue their quest for a sixth World Cup title against Norway at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, before England face Mexico in one of the standout ties at Houston’s NRG Stadium.

Monday’s action is headlined by a blockbuster Iberian derby as Portugal meet Spain at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Hosts United States will then take on Belgium at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

The final Round of 16 fixtures will be played on Tuesday. The winner of the Argentina, Cape Verde, Australia and Egypt contest will advance to face the next opponent in Kansas City, while Switzerland await either Colombia or Ghana in Seattle.

The quarter-final pairings have already been mapped out. The winner of Canada versus Morocco will face either France or Paraguay, while the victor between Brazil and Norway will meet the winner of the England and Mexico clash.

The winner of Portugal against Spain will face either the United States or Belgium in the last eight, while the survivor from Argentina’s section will meet the winner of the Switzerland versus Colombia or Ghana fixture.

With only 16 teams remaining, every match now carries added significance as defeat means elimination and victory brings teams one step closer to lifting football’s biggest prize.

The knockout stage will also feature some of the sport’s biggest stars, including Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who are pursuing what could be their final World Cup triumphs. Rising stars such as Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior, Erling Haaland and Lamine Yamal will also be aiming to leave their mark on the tournament.

Other top talents expected to feature include Ousmane Dembélé, Achraf Hakimi, Kevin De Bruyne and Jude Bellingham as former champions and emerging nations battle for a place in the quarter-finals.
