Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, is facing intensifying political pressure over his ambition to become Ogun State governor in 2027 following allegations of massive budget irregularities and petitions reportedly filed with anti-corruption agencies.

Adeola, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, has been linked to claims of irregular project insertions in federal budgets. The controversy gained fresh traction days after he met President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Lagos.

In his public account of the meeting, Adeola said he used the opportunity to thank the President for supporting key Ogun projects, including the proposed $7 billion Gateway Deep Seaport and the Ogun State Blue Marine Special Economic Zone. He also said they discussed national issues and the implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

However, sources familiar with the political discussions surrounding the encounter alleged that the conversation went beyond project updates. According to these sources, petitions submitted to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) were brought to the President’s attention.

One September petition reported in the media alleged that projects valued at more than ₦1 trillion were inserted into federal budgets between 2023 and 2026. Another report put the figure at over ₦250 billion and raised questions about contractors and companies allegedly connected to some of the projects.

The allegations remain unproven. They have not been established as fact by any court, and the reports do not constitute a finding of criminal liability against Adeola. A separate group has publicly demanded verifiable evidence, stating that it conducted field inspections of projects and interacted with beneficiaries.

Sources claimed that President Tinubu sought answers on the nature and strength of the allegations, which reportedly involved claims of unexecuted projects despite the purported release of funds, and payments allegedly channelled through companies described by petitioners as fronts. These claims have not been independently verified.

The same sources alleged that the President was not satisfied with Adeola’s explanations and expressed concern about the potential political fallout. With Adeola already campaigning for the Ogun governorship, any controversy surrounding the APC candidate could become a potent weapon for the opposition ahead of 2027.

One of the most striking claims circulating in political circles is that Tinubu told Adeola: “You are becoming a dent on my administration.” Neither the Presidency nor Adeola has confirmed the alleged confrontation or the reported remark.

The timing is politically sensitive. Adeola is no longer only a senator defending his legislative record; he is the APC’s standard-bearer for Ogun State and has begun unveiling a development agenda covering public finance, infrastructure, healthcare, education and agriculture. Questions of budget accountability and project execution could place the candidate on the defensive if the allegations gain wider traction.

Several critical questions remain unanswered: the exact contents of the petitions, whether the ICPC or the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has opened a formal investigation, the strength of the evidence, and whether President Tinubu personally confronted the senator.

Until the relevant agencies, the Presidency or Adeola himself provide definitive clarity, the claims remain allegations. What is already clear, however, is that the politics of budget accountability has become a new and potentially explosive factor in the Ogun 2027 governorship race.
