The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced former Rivers State governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as the running mate to its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, ahead of the 2027 general election.

The party said the decision followed extensive consultations involving party stakeholders, coalition partners, youth and women groups, as well as representatives from the country’s six geopolitical zones.

Speaking on Monday, the ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said Amaechi emerged as the vice-presidential nominee after finishing as runner-up in the party’s presidential primaries.

According to Abdullahi, Amaechi’s performance during the exercise underscored his national appeal and reinforced his status as one of Nigeria’s most experienced political leaders.

He described the proposed Atiku-Amaechi ticket as a strategic partnership designed to offer credible leadership capable of tackling the nation’s economic difficulties, insecurity and governance challenges.

“The proposed partnership between His Excellency Atiku Abubakar and Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi represents more than a political alliance; it is the coming together of two tested statesmen with the experience, national reach and leadership capacity required to rescue Nigeria from its current challenges and reposition the country for a new era of prosperity, security and inclusive development,” Abdullahi said.

The ADC spokesman highlighted Amaechi’s extensive public service career, noting that he had served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, two-term governor of Rivers State and later Minister of Transportation.

He said the former governor’s experience in both the legislative and executive arms of government would be a major asset to an ADC administration.

Abdullahi further argued that Amaechi’s political influence in the South-South and across Southern Nigeria, coupled with his reputation as a reform-minded administrator, would boost the party’s electoral chances.

According to him, the Atiku-Amaechi ticket brings together experience in governance, economic management, public administration and nation-building.

“Together, Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi embody a truly national ticket—one that bridges regions, generations and political traditions,” he added.

The party expressed confidence that the alliance would energise its growing coalition and provide Nigerians with what it described as a credible alternative in the 2027 presidential election.

ADC also called on its members, coalition partners, civil society organisations, youth and women groups, and Nigerians at large to rally behind its campaign.

The party reiterated its commitment to addressing insecurity, economic hardship, unemployment and issues of national unity if elected into office in 2027.
