The Allied People’s Movement (APM) has accused President Bola Tinubu of feeling threatened by the growing popularity of its presidential candidate, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, ahead of the 2027 general election.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Yusuf, the party claimed recent comments from the Presidency attacking Makinde reflected growing anxiety over his chances in the 2027 presidential race.

The APM was reacting to remarks by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communications, Daniel Bwala, who, during an interview on Monday, described Makinde and the APM as inconsequential to the forthcoming election.

Responding, the opposition party described Bwala’s comments as unfortunate and accused the Tinubu administration of resorting to personal attacks instead of addressing issues affecting Nigerians.

According to the APM, the Presidency’s criticism of Makinde demonstrates that it lacks a convincing record of achievements to present to Nigerians and is instead relying on political rhetoric to discredit its opponents.

The party further claimed that President Tinubu should be concerned about Makinde’s record in Oyo State, arguing that the governor’s achievements have made him a strong contender for the presidency.

The statement also alleged that Nigerians were increasingly looking to Makinde as an alternative leader capable of revitalising the economy, improving security, rebuilding infrastructure, creating jobs and tackling corruption.

The APM maintained that it would not engage in an exchange of insults with the Presidency, insisting that its campaign would remain focused on issues affecting the country and presenting its vision for national development.

It also claimed that Makinde enjoys widespread support among young Nigerians and expressed confidence that he would emerge victorious in the 2027 presidential election.
