The Lagos State Government has arrested 396 individuals engaged in street begging during a coordinated enforcement operation aimed at improving environmental sanitation, public safety and law enforcement across the state.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the development in a statement shared on his official X account on Tuesday.

According to the commissioner, the operation was carried out by officers of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to maintain environmental standards and tackle illegal activities in different parts of Lagos.

Wahab said all those arrested would undergo a profiling exercise to establish their identities and assess their individual circumstances before any necessary assistance is provided.

He added that after the profiling process, the affected individuals would be handed over to the appropriate authorities for reintegration and relocation to their respective states of origin.

The commissioner noted that the exercise reflects the state government’s commitment to maintaining public order, ensuring a cleaner environment and improving the safety and well-being of residents.

He also reaffirmed the administration’s resolve to sustain similar enforcement operations as part of broader efforts to preserve environmental cleanliness and enhance the quality of life across Lagos State.
