The Super Eagles of Nigeria have ramped up preparations in Fès for the knockout phase of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Twenty-five players participated in a rigorous training session on Friday as the team focused on tactical fine-tuning for their Round of 16 clash against the Mambas of Mozambique. The high-stakes match is scheduled for Monday at the Complexe Sportif de Fès.
Injury Woes and Fitness Updates
The Nigerian camp is managing several fitness concerns ahead of the crucial encounter.
Team Media Officer, Promise Efoghe, confirmed that striker Cyriel Dessers has been officially ruled out of the tournament due to a thigh injury. Following medical advice, Dessers has been released to return to his club for recovery.
Defender Ryan Alebiosu was present at the training grounds but did not participate in drills as he continues his recovery from a leg injury.
Midfielder Tochukwu Nnadi also missed the session after coming down with a cold, though his condition is being closely monitored by the medical team.
Coach Chelle’s Mandate: Focus and Discipline
Head coach Eric Chelle has challenged the squad to mentally reset and embrace the demands of knockout football. Efoghe relayed the coach’s core message:
“The coach told the players to put the group stage behind them and fully refocus on knockout football,” the media officer stated.
Chelle emphasized that discipline, concentration, and intensity are non-negotiable requirements for advancing in the competition, reminding the players that knockout matches demand total commitment from the very first whistle.
The team will continue to train and refine their strategy over the weekend as they aim to secure a place in the quarter-finals.
