President Bola Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to his longtime friend and ally, Chief Pius Akinyelure, as the former Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) board chairman marked his 84th birthday on May 2, 2026.

In a statement issued on Saturday by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, the President joined family, friends, and political associates in celebrating Akinyelure’s enduring legacy in Nigeria’s oil sector and his contributions to national development, particularly in Ondo State.

Reflecting on their decades-long relationship, Tinubu recalled their early professional connection at ExxonMobil, which later evolved when Akinyelure became his superior at Mobil Nigeria. According to the President, what began as a workplace association grew into a deep personal bond built on trust and shared values.

“Today, Chief Akinyelure is not just my friend and brother; he is a partner, associate, and confidante,” Tinubu said, commending his “candour, exceptional foresight, and unwavering support” over the years.

The President also acknowledged Akinyelure’s role in shaping Nigeria’s oil industry and his influence within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), as well as his support for the current administration’s Renewed Hope agenda.

Akinyelure, a certified accountant, spent over three decades in the oil and gas sector, beginning his career at ExxonMobil before rising through the ranks at Mobil Nigeria, where he served as Executive Director of Finance and External Relations. Tinubu himself retired from the company as treasurer.

Their professional and personal relationship, which spans more than 40 years, has remained a cornerstone of mutual respect and collaboration.

Tinubu concluded his tribute by wishing the elder statesman continued good health and many more years of service to both Ondo State and the nation.
