Lagos State has been thrown into mourning following the death of the Akran of Badagry, De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi, who passed away at the age of 89 after a brief illness.
The revered monarch’s death brings to a close an extraordinary 48-year reign, making him one of the longest-serving traditional rulers in the history of Lagos State.
Palace sources confirmed that the Akran was pronounced dead by medical experts, after which traditional burial rites were set in motion in line with Badagry customs.
Residents of Badagry have described the monarch’s passing as a profound loss to the ancient coastal town, saying it has lost not only a king but a father figure whose wisdom, guidance, and calming presence helped steady the community during challenging times.
Many recalled his decades of leadership, during which he played a unifying role and remained a symbol of stability, tradition, and cultural pride in the kingdom.
As of press time, the Lagos State Government had yet to issue an official statement on the passing of the traditional ruler.
