The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ajibola Basiru, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing concerns over political viability.

Basiru made the appeal during an interview on Arise Television, where he argued that Nigeria’s electoral system should not be burdened with parties that fail to meet constitutional thresholds.

According to him, the presence of what he described as “nonviable” political parties clutters ballot papers and undermines the efficiency of the electoral process.

He maintained that the APC’s position is rooted in legal provisions, noting that the Nigerian Constitution empowers INEC to deregister parties that do not meet specified electoral benchmarks.

Basiru dismissed concerns about Nigeria drifting toward a one-party state, stressing that the country still has multiple registered political parties, even if some lack electoral relevance.

He further stated that the call to deregister the ADC is part of a broader effort to ensure that only serious and competitive parties participate in elections.

The APC chieftain also referenced ongoing legal actions supporting the move, expressing confidence that INEC would exercise its authority appropriately.

Criticising the ADC, Basiru described the party as more focused on rhetoric than tangible political impact, adding that what he termed a “coalition of confusion” has failed to demonstrate meaningful electoral strength.

He concluded by urging INEC to act decisively in enforcing electoral laws, insisting that a streamlined party system would strengthen Nigeria’s democracy rather than weaken it.
