A new political bloc has emerged in Nigeria’s Southeast as former governors formally inaugurated a platform aimed at shaping governance and regional development.
The Southeast Forum of Former Governors was unveiled on Tuesday in Enugu, with a communiquê delivered by Minister of Works and former Ebonyi State governor, Senator Dave Umahi.
According to Umahi, the forum’s mission is to provide strategic guidance and advisory support to serving governors in the region on key national and zonal matters, regardless of political party affiliations. “The forum is open to all former governors of the Southeast,” he said.
Umahi noted that not all members could attend the inaugural meeting due to medical trips and prior commitments, but over 90% participation is expected at the next session in two weeks. Notable absentees included Senators Orji Uzor Kalu and Theodore Orji, Chief Ikedi Ohakim, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, Chief Achike Udenwa, and Chimaroke Nnamani.
The forum lauded incumbent Southeast governors for their strides in infrastructure, empowerment programs, and security initiatives, calling their contributions “impactful” on citizens’ lives.
In a significant political move, the former governors collectively endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term. “We boldly say that all Southeast governors are supporting Mr. President’s re-election,” Umahi declared, emphasizing the forum’s alignment with this stance. The communiqué also commended Tinubu for key appointments from the Southeast and ongoing regional infrastructure projects.
Looking ahead, the forum plans a courtesy visit to the Enugu State Governor and intends to engage the Southeast Governors’ Forum to formally present its objectives and explore collaborative opportunities. Umahi underscored the group’s goal: “to synergize with current leaders, highlight government achievements, and offer guidance based on our experience.”
Present at the meeting were Chief Martin Elechi and Senator Dave Umahi (Ebonyi), Mr. Sullivan Chime and Amb. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), and Dr. Chris Ngige (Anambra).
