A member of the House of Representatives and Coordinator of the Justice Forum, James Faleke, has expressed optimism about the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s prospects in Lagos ahead of the 2027 general elections, predicting a stronger performance than in 2023.

Speaking in an interview with journalists, Faleke said ongoing negotiations and mobilisation efforts within the party would translate into massive voter turnout and increased support for President Bola Tinubu and the APC in the state.

According to him, Lagos has evolved politically and structurally, giving the ruling party an advantage going into the next electoral cycle. He added that the party is working to consolidate its base and improve on past shortcomings.

Faleke also weighed in on the qualities expected of the next governor of Lagos State, stressing the importance of loyalty to the party, deep understanding of the state’s political structure, and strong connection with the people.

“The next governor must be accessible, people-oriented, and responsive to the needs of Lagosians,” he said.

On his recent endorsement of Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, Faleke confirmed authorship of the statement, describing Hamzat as the most suitable candidate for the job.

He highlighted Hamzat’s extensive experience, having served in multiple administrations and as deputy governor for eight years, noting that such exposure positions him to sustain and advance the state’s development agenda after Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s tenure.

Faleke further revealed that he has urged his supporters in Ikeja Federal Constituency to rally behind Hamzat, emphasising the need for unity within party ranks as the race for the governorship ticket intensifies.

Addressing concerns about internal democracy, Faleke said the APC would adhere to established guidelines for primaries, whether through consensus or direct elections, assuring that the process would be transparent and fair.

He dismissed fears of post-primary crises, noting that clarity in the nomination process would minimise disputes and prevent imposition of candidates.

Reflecting on the party’s performance in the 2023 presidential election in Lagos, Faleke admitted that low voter turnout among APC supporters contributed to the outcome. He, however, assured that lessons have been learnt and efforts are underway to boost participation in 2027.

“We are working harder now to ensure our supporters come out to vote. That gap will be addressed,” he said.

Faleke also rejected claims of overconfidence within the Lagos APC, stating that the party remains focused on strengthening its grassroots structure and improving governance delivery.

On opposition figures who have expressed confidence in defeating the APC in 2027, he said such statements were expected in a democratic setting, adding that his party would remain focused on its strategies and performance.

He acknowledged declining voter turnout as a concern but maintained that transparent candidate selection would rebuild public trust and encourage greater participation.

Faleke also dismissed fears that electioneering could disrupt governance in Lagos, noting that development projects have continued uninterrupted under the current administration.

“Even during election periods, Lagos remains committed to development. Projects across sectors are ongoing,” he said.

While declining to disclose his personal political ambition for 2027, Faleke concluded by urging patience, saying: “Just wait and see.”
