A political advocacy group, Niger Progressives & Prosperity Promoters (NPPP), has called on the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris Malagi, to contest the 2027 governorship election in Niger State.
In a statement issued by its convener, Ibrahim Mohammed, the group criticised what it described as poor governance in the state, citing alleged excessive foreign travels, unfulfilled agreements and insufficient developmental progress.
The group described Malagi, a former governorship aspirant in 2023, media entrepreneur and current minister, as a suitable candidate capable of repositioning the state through purposeful leadership.
According to the NPPP, the call for Malagi’s candidature cuts across party lines and reflects growing public demand for competent leadership. It urged youths, elders, professionals, farmers and community leaders to rally around capable leadership to advance the state’s development.
In the statement titled “Enough Is Enough: A Clarion Call on Mohammed Idris Malagi to Step Forward in 2027,” the group said Niger State had reached a critical point where citizens could no longer remain silent about governance challenges.
The group lamented that despite the state’s abundant natural and human resources, development outcomes remain poor, blaming what it called persistent underperformance in governance.
According to the statement, residents including pensioners, farmers and unemployed youths are increasingly frustrated, prompting a collective call for a change in leadership direction ahead of the next governorship election.
Describing the appeal as a call to duty rather than mere political persuasion, the group said citizens are tired of leadership that fails to deliver tangible improvements in education, healthcare, security, water supply and agricultural value chains.
The NPPP further portrayed Malagi as representing a different leadership model centred on strategic thinking, calm authority and effective execution rather than political theatrics.
The group argued that Malagi’s experience at the national level demonstrates a practical understanding of governance and policy implementation, adding that he possesses the ability to communicate vision and inspire public confidence.
It maintained that the minister’s leadership style is measured and consultative, emphasising decision-making built on dialogue and shared responsibility.
The group concluded that Niger State requires leadership capable of translating promises into measurable progress and urged Malagi to heed what it described as a growing public demand to contest the 2027 election.
