Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has officially declared her intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State under the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
She made the declaration during an interview with Nigerian football legend Segun Odegbami on Eagle7 Sports Radio (103.7FM), monitored on Saturday in Abeokuta.
The former senator and commissioner ruled out a return to the Senate or any appointive position, stressing that her political ambition is now firmly focused on the governorship of Ogun State.
“So moving ahead, I’m not going to be Commissioner. I’m not even going back to the same party because I think that’s old, and I don’t see the use of it. And I’m not going back to the Senate,” she said.
Emphasising her resolve, Obasanjo added that the governorship race is the only political office she is willing to pursue. “Like the Americans would say, there’s no need. The only thing I’ll come back to do is the governorship. And we have started that journey. We are going to see it through. We are very serious and very dedicated to it,” she said.
Her declaration comes shortly after she confirmed joining the APC, explaining that her return to active politics was driven by sustained pressure from supporters who believe she is well suited to lead the state.
“A group of people I did not bring together have been working for about two years now. They started talking to me about a year ago, saying, ‘We think you are the best candidate. We want you back,’” she added.
With the announcement, Iyabo Obasanjo becomes one of the early political figures to signal intent ahead of the 2027 Ogun State governorship race, setting the stage for what is expected to be a keenly contested election.
