The Labour Party has announced April 28, 2026, as the date for its presidential primary, alongside a detailed timetable for its ward, local government, and state congresses.

The schedule was conveyed in a formal notice to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), signed by the party’s Interim National Chairman, Nenadi Usman, and made available to journalists on Friday in Abuja.

According to the timetable, ward congresses will hold on April 23, followed by Local Government Area (LGA) congresses on April 24, and state congresses on April 25.

Usman disclosed that the party’s National Convention, where the presidential primary will take place, is scheduled for April 28 at the International Conference Centre Umuahia.

She explained that the notification was in compliance with relevant provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended), the Constitution, and INEC guidelines, which require political parties to formally inform the commission of such activities.

The Labour Party had earlier postponed its congresses and convention to allow for broader participation, particularly to complete its ongoing digital membership registration process.

ā€œWith this new timetable, the party is set to proceed with its elective congresses and national convention in an orderly and inclusive manner,ā€ Usman stated.

She urged INEC to notify its state offices to ensure proper monitoring of the processes in line with its statutory responsibilities.

Reaffirming the party’s stance, Usman said the Labour Party remains committed to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process through transparent and participatory internal elections.
