The family of Argentina captain Lionel Messi has confirmed that his father, Jorge Messi, is undergoing medical treatment for an undisclosed health condition and is showing encouraging signs of recovery.

In a statement issued to ESPN, the family disclosed that the 68-year-old is currently under medical supervision and responding positively to treatment.

“He is currently under medical supervision, recovering, and progressing favourably within his current condition,” the statement said.

The family also expressed concern over what it described as widespread misinformation and speculation regarding Jorge Messi’s health, stressing that only immediate family members possess accurate information about his condition.

“Given the versions, rumours and speculation that have circulated in recent hours, the family wishes to express its deep displeasure at the lack of sensitivity, respect and scruples with which some people have treated a strictly private and family matter,” the statement read.

According to the family, any information not released through official family channels should be regarded as inaccurate.

“Only his closest family members have accurate and reliable information about Jorge’s condition. Therefore, any version, statement or information that does not come from the family itself and its official channels should not be considered valid or true,” the statement added.

The family called on the media and the public to exercise responsibility, compassion and restraint, emphasising that personal health matters should not become subjects of public speculation.

While the nature of Jorge Messi’s illness was not disclosed, the statement thanked supporters for their concern and well wishes during the difficult period.

The health update comes as Lionel Messi continues to represent Argentina at the ongoing FIFA World Cup in the United States. The football icon has appeared emotional during the tournament, particularly after scoring in Argentina’s 3-0 opening victory over Algeria.

Addressing his reaction after the match, Messi explained that the emotions stemmed from personal circumstances rather than football matters.

“Why did I cry? It was something completely unrelated to football,” he said.

“I went through some difficult days, but I’m grateful to the entire delegation and my teammates because they were always by my side, giving me a lot of strength to help me get through it.”

Despite concerns off the pitch, Messi has continued to deliver historic performances, equalling Miroslav Klose’s World Cup goals record and surpassing Pelé’s tally for most goal contributions in the tournament’s history.

Jorge Messi has been a pivotal figure throughout his son’s career, serving as his agent and overseeing major transfers, commercial partnerships and business ventures from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain and later Inter Miami.

The family concluded its statement by renewing its appeal for privacy and promising to provide any significant updates through official channels.

“We sincerely appreciate the expressions of affection, respect and concern received, and we request that the privacy, confidentiality and intimacy of Jorge and his entire family be respected during this process,” the statement said.
