Portugal head coach Roberto Martínez has clarified the absence of key players Cristiano Ronaldo and Bernardo Silva from the squad for upcoming international friendlies, assuring fans that there is no long-term concern.
Speaking to reporters after unveiling his squad on Friday, March 20, Martinez explained that Ronaldo’s omission is due to a minor muscle injury and not a major setback.
“The World Cup is not at risk,” Martinez stated, dismissing concerns about the veteran forward’s availability for the 2026 tournament. “It’s a small muscle injury, and we expect him back in about a week or two.”
Ronaldo, who plays for Al-Nassr, has been sidelined since February 28 after sustaining a hamstring injury during a 3-1 victory over Al-Fayha in the Saudi Pro League. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner later travelled to Madrid for treatment.
Despite his absence from the upcoming matches, Martinez praised Ronaldo’s fitness levels, noting that his workload this season reflects his strong physical condition.
Meanwhile, midfielder Bernardo Silva was also left out of the squad, with the coach describing the decision as precautionary and based on medical advice from Manchester City.
“Bernardo Silva’s situation is a technical choice, based on the medical information provided by his club,” Martinez added.
Portugal is set to face Mexico at the iconic Estadio Azteca on March 28, before taking on the United States in Atlanta on April 1. The fixtures will serve as their final international outings ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.
