he 2027 governorship battle in Ogun State has taken another political turn as governorship aspirant Abayomi Hunye held a private meeting with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, amid his continuing legal challenge over the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship nomination process.

According to a statement issued by the Abayomi Hunye Media Team, the meeting focused on Hunye’s governorship ambition, the ongoing court proceedings and broader issues concerning leadership, governance, political stability and the democratic process in Ogun State.

The development comes against the backdrop of a lingering dispute over the APC governorship primary, which produced Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, as the party’s recognised candidate. Hunye has continued to challenge aspects of the process in court.

Hunye has maintained that the matter should be determined strictly through the judicial process and has expressed confidence that the courts will examine the issues on their merits.

His latest engagement with Obasanjo is therefore being viewed by his camp as part of broader consultations with experienced statesmen as the 2027 political contest gathers momentum.

However, the meeting itself should not be interpreted as an endorsement of Hunye’s aspiration by the former president, as no such endorsement was stated in the announcement.

The legal battle remains a significant component of the unfolding Ogun APC crisis. Hunye has previously challenged the circumstances surrounding the party’s nomination process and, more recently, instituted legal proceedings seeking judicial examination of electoral documents previously submitted by Adeola.

Meanwhile, the APC has publicly maintained that Adeola remains its recognised governorship candidate for the 2027 election, while Hunye insists that the issues before the courts should be allowed to run their course.

With political consultations intensifying ahead of 2027, the Hunye-Obasanjo meeting adds another layer to an already closely watched governorship contest in Ogun State.

The courts, rather than political declarations, will ultimately determine the legal issues presently before them.
