Political tensions are rising in Ogun State as Gbenga Daniel formally declared his intention to return to the Senate, picking up nomination and expression of interest forms at the APC national headquarters in Abuja.

His move comes just days after party stakeholders in Ogun East publicly endorsed Governor Dapo Abiodun as their preferred candidate for the same senatorial seat—a development that has set the stage for a high-stakes political clash ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Announcing his ambition, Daniel said he remains committed to “effective and responsive representation” for the people of Ogun East under the platform of the APC.

However, his declaration has disrupted what appeared to be a smooth consensus arrangement within the party, already used to produce the APC governorship candidate for the state’s 2027 race.

From Allies to Rivals

The looming contest between Daniel and Abiodun is layered with history. Their political relationship dates back to the early 2000s when both men clashed during the PDP governorship primaries. Despite losing that contest, Abiodun supported Daniel’s eventual emergence, contributing resources and structure to his campaign.

Years later, roles have reversed dramatically.

Daniel’s tenure as governor (2003–2011) was marred by political crises, including prolonged executive-legislative conflicts. His inability to install a successor weakened his influence, eventually pushing him into political isolation during the administration of Ibikunle Amosun.

During that period, Daniel faced multiple anti-graft investigations and was effectively sidelined from state politics.

Political Comeback and Renewed Conflict

Daniel’s political fortunes revived in 2019 when he joined the APC shortly before Abiodun’s governorship victory. In a move widely seen as strategic reconciliation, Abiodun reportedly restored Daniel’s political standing—facilitating the return of his seized assets, integrating his allies into government, and supporting his senatorial bid.

With backing from party leaders and traditional authorities, Daniel secured the Ogun East senatorial ticket, completing a remarkable comeback.

But the alliance soon fractured.

Party insiders allege that Daniel worked against Abiodun’s re-election in 2023, secretly backing opposition candidate Ladi Adebutu while benefiting from APC support during his own senatorial race.

Further accusations include attempts to undermine Abiodun’s electoral victory through legal and media campaigns—claims that have intensified mistrust within party ranks.

Stakeholders Push Back

Amid growing discontent, APC leaders in Ogun East rallied behind Abiodun, urging him to contest the senatorial seat after completing his second term as governor.

The endorsement was formalized at a stakeholders’ meeting reportedly attended by party leaders across all levels. Daniel’s presence at the meeting, however, sparked controversy after he allegedly arrived with a large entourage, violating the event’s delegate-only arrangement.

Sources say the incident further strained his relationship with party leadership, reinforcing perceptions of discord and defiance.

Battle Lines Drawn

Supporters of Abiodun point to his administration’s record, highlighting economic growth, relative political stability, and increased investor confidence in Ogun State.

They argue that his leadership has transformed the state’s economy and eliminated the era of political violence and intimidation.

Meanwhile, critics of Daniel within the party accuse him of political opportunism and disloyalty—claims that could shape voter sentiment as the race approaches.

Countdown to 2027

With both camps digging in, the Ogun East senatorial race is shaping up to be one of the most dramatic contests in the state’s recent political history.

As party dynamics evolve and stakeholders weigh their options, the electorate will ultimately decide whether Daniel’s comeback story continues—or whether he faces another রাজনৈতিক setback in a rivalry that has come full circle.
