A gubernatorial aspirant under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, Olufemi Oguntoyinbo, has thrown his weight behind a growing coalition effort among opposition parties to present a unified presidential candidate in the 2027 general elections.
In a statement released on Sunday in Ibadan, Oguntoyinbo described the move as a crucial step toward safeguarding Nigeria’s democratic future. His remarks followed a high-level meeting of opposition leaders held in the Oyo State capital on Saturday, where stakeholders reportedly agreed on the need to rally behind a single candidate to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Oguntoyinbo praised the initiative, calling it both strategic and necessary to counter the dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). According to him, unity among opposition parties could significantly improve their chances of electoral success while strengthening democratic processes.
“I commend the decision of the opposition leaders to field a single candidate in the 2027 presidential election. This is a wise and timely move that can secure victory for the opposition and restore balance to Nigeria’s political landscape,” he stated.
He further emphasized that collaboration across party lines is essential, noting that the country’s democratic stability depends on leaders setting aside personal ambitions in favor of collective national interest.
“The summit is timely and necessary. Nigeria’s democratic future depends on the ability of opposition parties to rise above individual interests and work together,” Oguntoyinbo added.
The development signals a potential shift in Nigeria’s political dynamics ahead of the 2027 elections, as opposition parties explore unified strategies to challenge the incumbent administration.
