Abba Kabir Yusuf, the Governor of Kano State, has alleged that his former deputy, Aminu Abdusalam Gwarzo, was involved in a failed plot to unseat him from office.
The governor made the revelation while addressing members of a loyal political group at the Government House in Kano, shedding light on tensions that reportedly existed between the two before Gwarzo’s resignation.
Yusuf, who emerged victorious in the 2023 governorship election under the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Partyalongside Gwarzo, did not provide specific details of the alleged plot. However, he maintained that the attempt to remove him ultimately failed.
“Today, the deputy governor who came with us on the same ticket is no longer with us… Whatever made him act that way was an attempt to remove me and take over, but God didn’t allow it,” Yusuf stated.
Despite the circumstances, the governor described Gwarzo’s exit as an opportunity to appoint a more credible replacement. He added that he had only heard about the resignation and was yet to receive an official communication confirming it.
Yusuf also addressed criticisms from the Kwankwasiyya Movement, which accused him of betrayal following his departure from the NNPP. In response, the governor pointed to recent defections as evidence of internal contradictions within the movement.
He stressed that his administration remains committed to prioritising the interests of Kano residents, noting that governance would not be derailed by political tensions.
With several qualified candidates reportedly being considered for the vacant deputy governor position, Yusuf assured that his government remains focused on delivering its mandate.
