Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved the inauguration of a Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the maiden National Intermediate Games Lagos 2026, marking a significant step toward strengthening Nigeria’s sports development pipeline.

The initiative activates the framework for hosting the country’s first structured transition competition for athletes aged 16 to 19, designed to bridge the gap between grassroots and elite sports.

The Games are expected to draw participants from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Lagos was selected as host of the inaugural edition, a decision linked to its modern sporting infrastructure and proven capacity to deliver large-scale events, further cementing its reputation as Nigeria’s sports hub.

The LOC will be co-chaired by Sam Egube, Mobolaji Ogunlende, and Lekan Fatodu, who will oversee logistics, technical operations, and strategic planning. The committee is expected to collaborate closely with the National Sports Commission and other stakeholders to ensure global standards in organisation, integrity, and athlete welfare.

Fatodu described the Governor’s approval as a decisive move in youth sports development, noting that the Games will create structured opportunities for young talents while positioning sports as a pathway for economic growth and national pride.

He added that the competition will leverage modern facilities and advanced technology in line with international standards, reflecting sustained government investment in the sector.

Also speaking, Bukola Olopade, Director General of the National Sports Commission, said Lagos was chosen due to its consistent track record in delivering high-impact sporting events.

ā€œThere is a unique energy that Lagos brings to national assignments, and with this high-calibre LOC, we are confident the Games are in capable hands,ā€ Olopade said, expressing optimism about collaboration between national and state sports bodies.

The National Intermediate Games is designed to address a long-standing gap in Nigeria’s sports ecosystem, particularly the transition phase where many promising athletes are lost due to limited competitive opportunities.

Under Sanwo-Olu’s administration, Lagos has maintained strong investment in sports infrastructure and athlete development, with the hosting of the 2026 Games seen as a major milestone in that commitment.

The event is expected to attract thousands of athletes, officials, and enthusiasts, further reinforcing Lagos’ standing as Nigeria’s leading sports destination.
