Former spokesperson to ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Segun Sowunmi, has announced his intention to contest the Ogun State governorship election in 2027.
Sowunmi made the declaration on Tuesday during an interactive Zoom session with his supporters and members of the press.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain said his decision was motivated by what he described as persistent development gaps and governance failures in the state.
According to him, his ambition is driven by the urgent need to address insecurity, revamp education, improve healthcare delivery, and restore effective governance in Ogun State.
“As a critical stakeholder who has always been there, I have continued to offer support, and at this critical time, I am coming forward with the best ideas for governance in our dear state,” Sowunmi said.
He lamented the lack of policy continuity, noting that successive administrations have failed to build on existing programmes to achieve sustainable development.
Sowunmi also expressed concern that Ogun State has not maximised the economic advantages of its proximity to Lagos, despite its strategic location and industrial potential.
“We need to design Ogun not to work for the person in Oke-Mosan, but to work for every person in the nooks and crannies of the state,” he said.
Speaking on healthcare, Sowunmi criticised the condition of public hospitals, describing it as embarrassing for a state with Ogun’s strategic importance.
“It is a little bit disgusting that Ogun has been embarrassed in terms of interventions in hospitals. If we look at the infrastructure in the oldest government hospital located in Abeokuta, the Sacred Heart Hospital, there is no reason why Ogun should not be the healthcare capital of the South-West,” he added.
While acknowledging the internal crises within the PDP, Sowunmi disclosed that he is closely monitoring developments across various political parties and would soon announce the platform on which he intends to pursue his governorship ambition.
