President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated former senator and veteran Cross River politician Florence Ita Giwa on her 80th birthday, describing her as a courageous trailblazer who shattered political barriers and inspired women across Nigeria.
In a statement issued Thursday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President joined family, friends, and political associates in celebrating the former lawmaker’s milestone while acknowledging her decades of public service.
Tinubu recalled that Ita Giwa represented Cross River South Senatorial District in the Senate from 1999 to 2003 and previously served as chairman of the National Republican Convention (NRC) in Delta State.
She was also elected to the House of Representatives between 1992 and 1993 during Nigeria’s Third Republic.
According to the President, her political journey reflects uncommon resilience and determination, noting that she carved a path for women in leadership at a time when female participation in politics was limited.
Tinubu also paid tribute to her strong advocacy for the Bakassi Peninsula, a campaign that earned her the widely known nickname “Mama Bakassi.”
He described her commitment to the cause as passionate and exemplary, particularly for women aspiring to roles in public service.
The President commended her contributions to lawmaking, policy development, and Nigeria’s democratic growth, wishing her continued strength and good health as she marks her 80th birthday.
