The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured Nigerians of its preparedness for the 2027 general election, despite delays in the passage of the amended Electoral Act currently before the National Assembly.
The commission disclosed that it has finalized the election timetable and schedule of activities, signaling its commitment to delivering a credible electoral process.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, made the disclosure on Wednesday in Abuja during a meeting with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs).
According to Amupitan, INEC has already forwarded its inputs and recommendations on the amended Electoral Act to the National Assembly. However, he acknowledged that the timing of the lawmakers’ passage of the bill could affect certain aspects of the commission’s planned activities.
He explained that, pending the amendment of the Act, INEC would continue to operate based on the existing electoral law.
“While some items in our schedule may be impacted by the timing of the amendment, the commission currently has no option but to rely on the subsisting Electoral Act for its activities,” Amupitan said.
He reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to transparency and collaboration with stakeholders, assuring that the commission remains focused on its constitutional mandate ahead of the 2027 polls.
